To become a makeup artist, it takes a number of personality traits. You have to be eager, passionate, creative, punctual, reliable, innovative, patient and tenacious. Even though the industry is highly glamorised, it is often a demanding job with gruelling hours and lulls between bookings. Though it may be hard at times to motivate yourself to keep going, it is a pre-requisite to find the motivation somewhere so that you can continue to successful in this field.

Firstly, you need to have some kind of training in makeup artistry. If you are not sure exactly what part of the field you would like to specialise in, whether it be in special effects, bridal, editorial work or for film, try your hand at everything. At the end, you would already know what tangent you have an affinity for and what excites you.

It is important that whatever fields you choose challenge and excite you so that you continue to be motivated everyday. Enrol in a professional school that holds a good reputation in the industry, would certify you in keeping with your country’s labour laws and even assist with job placement after you graduate from your programme.

Practise more than what is required by your programme. To make it as a makeup artist, you really need to practise on different skin tones, skin types and with various makeup products.

This way you can build your portfolio with a wide range of looks and your makeup kit with the products you work best with and give you optimum results for varying purposes. Having a kit that contains one dominant makeup brand does not give you a wide appreciation for other products out on the market.

Some clients have allergic reactions to particular brands and ingredients so it is a good idea to have various types of products. Work with models from differing races and with various facial features. This way you are more marketable and can work with any model with which you must do a good job.To become a successful makeup artist, you must be able to work and stand on your feet for long hours at a time. A shoot can last a few hours or go on for days and you must be mentally and physically prepared for this type of regular irregularity.

You also must have a gentle but firm character to negotiate your pay as well as to get along well with clients that ask for you specifically on another occasion. You must also present yourself as a knowledgeable professional in the field with the ability to guide clients into what is the best look for them for a spedific purpose. You must also be able to listen to what the client is really saying so that you can please them even if the request is unclear.

Becoming a makeup artist requires you to have determination and creativity so that you can meet and surpass the expectations of your clients in the industry.
