This programme is designed to equip candidates with the skills and knowledge necessary to provide clients with an appropriate gym workout and personalised training programmes / sessions, specific to their needs in order to improve overall fitness including strength, flexibility and cardio-respiratory function. It also prepares the candidate with the skills to provide detailed advice on lifestyle to maintain all aspects of their client’s health, fitness and well-being. The course combines ITEC Gym Instructor level 2 and Personal Trainer Level 3, with emphasis on both theory and practical skills.
The combination of these two ITEC Diplomas provides candidates with a broad knowledge and skill base required to be a proficient, competent and safe practitioner in the health and fitness industry.

The course consists of five modules. Some of the topics covered in this comprehensive course include:- | | | | Module 1: Gym Instruction Level 2 | | |  | Understand and demonstrate the importance of screening, consultation and the completion of the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PARQ) |
|  | Devise fitness programmes for a variety of different types of clients, making recommendations and demonstrating adaptation and progression |
|  | Understand and recognise the symptoms of overtraining and how to avoid it. |

 | Learn the principles of motivation and adherence in the context of a health & fitness environment and apply them in order to reduce drop out and relapse of clients |

 | Understand the principles of physical fitness and health and apply them to exercise |

 | Understand the physical changes in the body and the components of fitness in a gym session |

 | Understand the principles of training and the components of fitness related to training and physical activity |
|
 | Understand and demonstrate how to set up and take a circuit training session |

 | Understand, recognise and explain the contraindications to exercise, including free weights, machine weights and cardiovascular machines. |

 | Understand and explain the use, benefits and safety precautions of safe, effective exercise |

 | Understand, demonstrate and explain basis lifting fundamentals and techniques for standing and bench free weights. |

 | Understand, demonstrate and explain safe and effective instruction for a programme in the gym |

 | Understand and demonstrate safe and effective instruction on the use of cardiovascular and resistance weight machines and free weights and their effects on the body. |

 | Understand and demonstrate health and safety of equipment, how to do a risk assessment prior to an exercise session and following the appropriate safety precautions prior to and during exercising. |

 | Demonstrate and explain how to maintain the equipment and correct hygiene procedures. |

| Module 2: Personal Training Level 3 |

 | Assessing clients in order to develop an appropriate exercise programme that reflects their specific level of fitness, taking into account any limitations or injuries |

 | Understand and demonstrate how to help clients at all levels to reach their goals and how to adapt the programme for clients with specific requirements. |

 | Understand and demonstrate the special considerations required when designing a programme for pre-existing injuries. Use this knowledge to assist sports people to maintain fitness level while recovering from injury. |

 | Understand and explain the physical laws affecting motion, balance and alignment. Assess and explain the different factors which may influence posture and recognise postural conditions |
|
 | Understand, demonstrate and explain correct exercise techniques and heart rate training zones |
|
 | Understand, demonstrate and explain the exercises associated with core stabilisation and local muscle changes associated with lack of specific stabilisation exercises |
|
 | Understand and explain the short and long term effects of exercise on the cardio respiratory system |
|
 | Understand the effects of exercise on the body and the benefits of exercise in maintaining health and fitness. |

 | Understand and demonstrate commonly used resistance training systems and flexibility training |

 | Understand, demonstrate and explain the training variables to develop strength, endurance, hypertrophy, speed and power. |

 | Understand, demonstrate and explain the various methods of flexibility training |

 | Understand movement and the human body and how muscle strength and endurance can be enhanced. |

 | Understand and demonstrate the benefits of different physical activities on fitness |

 | Learn and develop effective communication and teaching techniques necessary to guide those engaged in any physical activity. |

 | Learn how to plan a 10 session exercise course, demonstrating the objectives of each session. Plan and explain a progressive exercise programme outlining reasons for choosing specific exercises. Understand how to adapt programmes for clients with particular needs |

 | Learn how to review the exercise programme with clients and how to use an efficient method of evaluation and point/milestones in the programme |

 | Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the importance of rest and recovery times. |

 | Understand and recognise the range of medical conditions which maybe aggravated by physical activity or lead to injury |

 | Understand the legal responsibilities the Personal trainer must adhere to and the importance of a Code of Conduct |

| Module 5: Nutrition for Fitness Instructors |

 | Understand the principles of nutrition and apply this learning when devising health and fitness programmes for clients |

 | Understand the process by which food is broken down by the alimentary canal during the digestive process and how nutrients are absorbed |
|
 | Understand and design a Diet Questionnaire and consultation form |
|
 | Understand the nutritional goals of the client and the importance of feedback |
|
 | Understand the effects of outside factors on dietary requirements |
|
 | Understand the function of water in the diet and the effects of dehydration |
|
 | Understand and explain calorie/kilojoule and the role of carbohydrates, protein, fat, fibre, minerals and cholesterol in the diet for a person exercising |
|
 | Understand the problems associated with food intolerances |
|
 | Understand and explain Glycaemic Index and the importance of regular meals. |
|
 | Understand the use of supplements, their safety, effectiveness and contraindications to their use. |
